On the Friday before Memorial Day, our morning speaker featured Dr. Timothy McMahon who is a Professor of History at Marquette University. Tim shared his vast knowledge of WWI in a talk entitled, "Catastrophic Catalyst - The Seeds of WWI."

Most of us know that the war was one of the deadliest conflicts in history. Tim noted that more than 16 million soldiers and civilians died as a result of the war but his talked pointed to the events that lead up to the war that lasted from 1914 to 1918 and the impact it had on future wars and even today.

This included major political changes, the redrawing of maps in Europe and Russia, and the forming of the League of Nations which aimed at preventing another similar conflict. Unfortunately, with weakened states, economic depression, and renewed European nationalism, it wasn’t enough to prevent the events that lead to World War II.

With only one week to go until our major fundraiser of the year, Spikes for Tykes, Barry James announced that we’re 3/4 way to our total goal of $50,000 and that amounts raised after May 30th and through the end of June still count toward our total. So for Elmbrook Rotarians, if you still haven’t gotten a sponsor or made a donation, now’s the time!

Next week, our speaker will be Dan Glomski of the accounting firm, Komisar, Brady & Co. who will give a talk on “What is Your Business Worth.”
