How people think about aging and what has influenced that perspective
May 28, 2021
Ellen Lemis a professor of English and Gender Studies at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha and her recent book Gray Matters: Finding Meaning in the Stories of Later Life looks at how people think about aging and what has influenced that perspective. She looks at TV shows (like "Grace and Frankie"), films ("The Intern") and literature to show that these cultural texts can show us possibilities for aging but also can provide negative messages. Aside from bringing in the latest research on work/retirement, dementia, housing, intimacy and much more, she also include interviews with over 200 people who are over 65 to bring in their insights as well. The expected result is to look at aging in new and unpredictable ways, which she think is necessary since many people only associate becoming older with decline. |

Join Elmbrook Rotary as we Walk for Hope supporting Common Hope's programs in Guatemala. We walk because less than 20% of kids graduate from high school in Guatemala. We walk to support education for students living in poverty, so that they can graduate and help end generational poverty for their family. We walk for the kids just starting school, where they will likely hold a book for the first time. We walk so families have access to quality health care. We walk to help young people dream, grow, and succeed. Now more than ever, all of us appreciate the Power of Healthcare, Community and Hope. Let's walk the Extra Mile to fight poverty with diplomas! Each $1,200 we raise will sponsor a student and their family for one year. Support our team by going to our fundraising page (event link on left). |

Join the Rotary Straight Shooters on June 17 as we enjoy a shotgun outing breaking clay targets at the Waukesha Gun Club. We’ll meet at 4:30 p.m. in the clubhouse and shoot Sporting Clays by walking the course and shooting from stands with different target presentations. It's very much like golf, except we'll use shotguns instead of clubs (and there are no water hazzards to drop a ball in!). Feel free to bring your friends. Anyone new to shooting is welcome. We’ll have seasoned shooters to coach and help you out. If you don’t have a shotgun, contact Harry Farchmin, and we’ll arrange for one of our members to bring one for you to use. The club also has shotguns for rent. Shot shells can be purchased at the club. After shooting, we’ll gather for some refreshments. |

Ascent - 25-story mass timber building at 700 E. Kilbourn Ave.
Jun. 25, 2021
Mass timber outperforms traditional building materials in fires, earthquakes, and extreme wind conditions. But that's not all that makes it the most exciting trend in architecture. This renewable resource has a negative carbon impact, and Ascent's carbon benefit represents the equivalent of removing 2,350 cars from the road per year. |

A Creative Place: The History of Wisconsin Art
Jul. 09, 2021
Today, Wisconsin boasts vibrant art scenes in its major cities and across the state. But how did we get here? It starts with the state’s first native people, yet this history and the accomplishments of successive generations of artists has not been adequately researched, or published. In fact, the only book to address the topic is Porter Butts, Art in Wisconsin, which appeared in 1936 and has been neither updated, nor succeeded by a new publication. Thomas Lidtke and Annemarie Sawkins are completing writing, researching and working on a comprehensive history of art in Wisconsin. Their vision is to produce (along with expert contributors) the most complete survey on Wisconsin art and artists within the state. It begins with the spiritual and creative endeavors of Wisconsin’s First Nations and runs through 400 years of French and British occupation, the nineteenth century, and then extends through the twentieth century. |

Life After Grief
Oct. 22, 2021
At one time or another we all will all experience loss and grief. It may be the death of someone close, a divorce, the loss of a job, a miscarriage, a chronic illness, an injury, or any number of traumatic events. Life After Grief offers an understanding of the experience of loss and grief, and lays out pathways of healing for those who are hurting, and advice for those trying to help those who mourn. The book address questions like:
Getting through grief is not just about answering questions, however. Those who grieve need ways to cope, ways to hold on, ways to know they are not alone. And they need ways to find the comforting presence of God. The book also deals with the severe forms of loss we call trauma. Life After Grief also offers practical ways to move through the process of grieving, like:
Life After Grief not only offers a lifeline for those who mourn, but also provides an understanding of the dynamics of grief to friends and family helping the person dealing with loss. Mel Lawrenz (Ph.D., Marquette University) is minister at large for Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, WI, and director of The Brook Network (www.thebrooknetwork.org). |
