![]() Single Stream Recycling - How it Works & Where Does it All Go?
Apr 23, 2021 7:00 AM
Single-stream (also known as “fully commingled” or "single-sort") recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers, plastics, metals, and other containers are mixed in a collection truck, instead of being sorted by the depositor into separate commodities (newspaper, paperboard, corrugated fiberboard, plastic, glass, etc.) and handled separately throughout the collection process. In single-stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables, with materials being separated for reuse at a materials recovery facility (MRF). The single-stream option replaces the dual-stream option, which is where people separate certain recyclable materials and place them in separate containers for collection. |

Elmbrook Education Foundation
Apr 30, 2021
The Elmbrook Education Foundation (formerly known as the Lancer-Spartan Scholarship Foundation) was organized in 1958 to award scholarships to select Elmbrook School District high school graduates. In 1999, the Foundation's mission expanded to include innovative teacher grants for projects that would benefit all students, raise money to support and strengthen outstanding learning ideas that improve the overall educational quality of our public schools.
Since inception, the EEF has awarded over $1,300,000 in scholarships and $425,000 in grants which enhance and extend the established curriculum and support projects that are beyond the District's budget. https://www.elmbrookschools.org/elmbrook-education-foundation |

How people think about aging and what has influenced that perspective
May 28, 2021
Ellen Lemis a professor of English and Gender Studies at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha and her recent book Gray Matters: Finding Meaning in the Stories of Later Life looks at how people think about aging and what has influenced that perspective. She looks at TV shows (like "Grace and Frankie"), films ("The Intern") and literature to show that these cultural texts can show us possibilities for aging but also can provide negative messages. Aside from bringing in the latest research on work/retirement, dementia, housing, intimacy and much more, she also include interviews with over 200 people who are over 65 to bring in their insights as well. The expected result is to look at aging in new and unpredictable ways, which she think is necessary since many people only associate becoming older with decline. |

Join Elmbrook Rotary as we Walk for Hope supporting Common Hope's programs in Guatemala. We walk because less than 20% of kids graduate from high school in Guatemala. We walk to support education for students living in poverty, so that they can graduate and help end generational poverty for their family. We walk for the kids just starting school, where they will likely hold a book for the first time. We walk so families have access to quality health care. We walk to help young people dream, grow, and succeed. Now more than ever, all of us appreciate the Power of Healthcare, Community and Hope. Let's walk the Extra Mile to fight poverty with diplomas! Each $1,200 we raise will sponsor a student and their family for one year. Support our team by going to our fundraising page (event link on left). |
