Spikes for Tykes is an annual fundraiser started by Elmbrook Rotary Club in 1987, initially to benefit Polio Plus. Later, proceeds went to the Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Fund, then to fund our pledge to support the development of the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts (see related story). Now the funds support various charitable causes that benefit children. Benefactors in addition to the Wilson Center are Kilifi Kids, a program supporting the health and welfare of children in Kenya, and Polio Plus, making the final press to eliminate polio entirely through the world. Since inception, ERC has raised well over $300,000.
Spikes for Tykes, held at Mitchell Park in Brookfield, is a day of volleyball during which teams play for one hour against opponents that they request, or teams that are assigned at random. The 2009 event is scheduled for Saturday, May 30.
